Unshielded drum cores are cheap and have lots of L*I^2 for their size. But they leak mag fields. Maybe I can put two side-by-side and have their far fields mostly cancel. I need two anyhow. Most are 2-pin parts and without a polarity dot, we'd have to test and mark them. Wurth has a 4-pin part with a dot. https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Wurth-Elektronik/7447211101?qs=HXx4m3XcTe...

I remember there was a series of articles written in England by an author named "Cathode Ray". They were very interesting and well-written. Do any of the oldtimers remember these articles, and can they point me to an archive? Many thanks. -- MRM

Apart from capacitor ESR checking, I use this meter for checking and tracking battery ESRs. Can anyone give me a safe upper voltage level opinion for not damaging the meter in this use? I have used it to check 2S Li-ion but could you get away with a 10S (42V) battery or 48V e-bike battery for example? The meter is too useful to damage! Or perhaps a standard capacitor in series would be a ...

Hi, all, Just wanted to pass along a new (to me) discovery. You know how when you try removing rosin flux with "flux remover" or a polar solvent such as methanol or acetone, it leaves all this white crap behind? Yesterday I was in Advanced Auto Parts to get a can of Berryman B12 to clean out my fuel injectors. Just on spec, I bought a can of Carquest brake cleaner ($8ish for a 19...

Hi I need to fool a heat pump into controlling the output temperature. Normally the heat pump is controlled with an external NTC resistor (from 1kohm to 15kohm). I will control it with USB from a PC by connecting a controlled source. I have this one in my lab, but it only goes to 4kohm: https://www.orbitadigital.com/en/cctv/accessoires/tools/34781-uni-trend-ut714-temperature-p

I took a class many years ago, where they talked about creating separate power and ground planes for the analog and digital circuitry on a board. Of course, the ground planes would be joined at one location, typically under the chip that had both analog and digital signals, like an ADC or DAC. The high speed digital signals would be routed anywhere other than over the analog gr

The anti vehicle paper device killed metal (control arm) and rubber (CV axle). Already replaced control arm. Need to repair CV axle. What kind of grease should I use? High temperature grease? https://www.autozone.com/drivetrain/quick-boot-cv/p/rein-cv-quick-boot-bkb0072r/694989_0_0 PS: I think the tow truck driver broke the CV joint, but it's not really his fault. I gave me $20 tip a...

I've heard that CAIG Deoxit D55-6 spray contact cleaner is the best. I have a can, but I can't find it. I can find a small can of LPS Instant Contact Cleaner. Is that as good? Almost as good? (They don't sell that exact thing anymore. There are about 5 kinds of LPS ccleaner now.) Or should I keep looking for the Deoxit, or buy another can (cheepest is about $17!!)
