Using "refute" when you meant "attempted to refute" isn't entirely correct, but it's not the kind of error that makes you an illiterate ass. Phil's aversion to the use of the term "wheel-gun" for a revolver isn't illiterate either - he's clearly not as well-read as he likes to think, but being "illiterate" means not being able to read at all, as opposed to imagining that you've read all that you might need to.
