It depends. You may need it inside the system for development/test - in that case, the ribbon connector is robust and works fine. Saving the cost of the connector makes sense in higher production volumes.

Sound like the Tag-Connect stuff - but these only come in 6-14 pin versions IIRC. I have not used them myself, but they look useful, and use little PCB space. cu Michael -- Some people have no respect of age unless it is bottled.
