Operative Word: Dreaming (of hydrogen power)

Started by Joe Gwinn October 27, 2023
In the May 22 to June 4, 2023) issue of Aviation Week, on page 5,
there was a very interesting long letter from Greg A Lloyd of Pullman,
Washington, to the editor on the practicalities of the Hydrogen
Economy, in particular as it applies to aircraft propulsion.
Basically, it's not even close to practical, and he lays it out point
by point.

The URL is
<https://aviationweek.com/aviation-week-space-technology/letters-our-readers-may-22-2023>

Sadly, this is behind a paywall, but large libraries will likely have
this issue on hand.

Mr Lloyd is an expert on Hydrogen fuel cells and sensors. with many
patents to his name.

He doesn't work for Rolls-Royce, obviously, and probably never did. No one wants to hear from him. https://www.rolls-royce.com/innovation/alternative-fuels/hydrogen.aspx

"Hydrogen has the benefit of being available in almost unlimited quantities when chemically combined with other elements." Yes, it's great when combined with carbon. Funny! Why not just put the Small Modular Nuclear Reactor on the airplane? R-R periodically commits economic suicide, and they seem to be on schedule.

Nitrogen works too, and you can burn ammonia or hydrazine without making global warming worse. Boron hydrides are trickier

They aren't commercial available, and nobody wants Chernoyl crashing in their back yard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear-powered_aircraft

Like the phoenix, Rolls-Royce does seem to rise again from from the ashes. -- Bill Sloman, Sydney
