Wait for it...the negative/sarcastic political comments will begin in 1...2...3... 

For those that are interested, Iwo Jima became a USCG Loran station shortly after the end of WWII. 
(Loran was the ground based precursor to GPS.) Coasties would be stationed on the rock for a full 
year, away from family and friends. 

The ships that sailed safely through that region because of the navigation signal broadcast from 
Iwo Jima from 1949 to 1994 can thank the brave people like Hershel &ldquo;Woody&rdquo; Williams for making 
that possible.
