An output marked subwoofer should be already filtered. If so, no crossover needed. You can find out by connecting an ordinary speaker to it, if all you get is subwoofer frequency sound, it's filtered.

Thanks. I have a subwoofer with my home computer. Logitech system and it so=
unds better than without the subwoofer of previous systems.

Andy (OP), there is no built-in amplifier for a subwoofer on your 
system. This is a common thing, driving a large low frequency speaker 
from the main unit is not something that everyone will do, so why pay 
for the heavy power electronics?

Personally, I find subwoofers a waste of time, unless the other speakers 
are weedy. But some folks like earth shattering explosions.

By the way, a lot of these surround speakers, sub woofers, and receivers 
you will find thrown out, or very cheep on eBay.

Folks are downsizing, or partners find them too complicated and the 
wires ugly. Just have a read of the different surround encoding systems, 
how you get them, decode, adjust the timing, arrange the furniture, is a 
lot of faff worthwhile for only for the most dedicated movie viewer.

Years ago, I visited a home where they had just bought a new CRT TV with 
attached surround speakers.

The six were neatly fitted in a row under the TV.

Ye could say, they invented the soundbar ;-)

The crossovers are used on woofers and tweeters.  That makes only the 
low or high frequencies are routed to the correct speaker and the other 
frequencies are not over powering the woofer or tweeter.  

If your amp has an output dedicated to the woofer, then they may not 
need a crossover.  It would be built in the amp.

Often the sub-woofers only have one speaker and are designed to be fed 
from both channels, that may be the reason for the woofer output on the 
amp.
