So I'm doing a simplified version of the differential laser noise canceller, which in the spherical cow universe looks like it does very well out to about 10 MHz, thanks to the amazing properties of BFP640s and some new photodiodes with reduced series resistance. (At least according to Hamamatsu.) One thing I need for this is an adjustable resistance with good bandwidth. The fastest...

Hi, all, I'm doing a lab special for some folks in the physics department of the University of Oxford. It's an interesting wrinkle on the laser noise canceller, which is going to work with some HgCdTe photodiodes at 5 microns. (*) These gizmos are probably significantly less linear than silicon diodes, so I'm giving them an offset current adjust pot so that they can tweak the canc...

I have some old assembly listing files that are text, paged by formfeed characters. I can't find a way to print nice listings on a modern laser printer/copier. They ignore the formfeeds or print a black box. Any ideas? Maybe I could write a program to replace the ff's with a control sequence or something?

Years ago... I worked at a place that stuffed its own through-hole boards. There was a machine at each workstation with a red laser pointer. The pointer would show the location for the next part to be inserted. I think it also lit an LED on the associated parts bin, but I'm not sure. What is this machine called, and do they still make them? Or better yet, what might be involved to repl...

I've had a few instances where I was interested in seeing the probability density function of a waveform, the voltage histogram, in LT Spice. I never came up with a decent way to display that within Spice. Hi all, (as is usual) I think I figured this out in the process of asking you a question. But I welcome any input or comments. First a bit of background. I made the laser diode controller ~10 years ago. I added this section so that you could side lock to one of the absorption features. Input signal is low pass filtered(single pole), DC offset, maybe some gain and then sent to the pi...

User interface faux pas: First it was blue LEDs that were put in everything; they were usually run too bright as well so you had to put a piece of electrical tape over the power indicator on your DVD player if you didn't want what looked like a laser shooting you in the eye while you tried to watch a movie. Manufacturers seem to have moved away from putting them in everything but ther...

I had cataract surgery in one eye and will do the other one soon. I have a pretty high power 400 nm laser. If I shoot it at the wall, the dot is bright with the repaired plastic-lens eye and invisible with the one that has the cataract. My doctor explained that a cataract absorbs blue light, and that's why some old ladies color their hair bluish-white, because then it looks right to them. ...
