There are some dynamite isolated d-s ADCs around. You give them a 20 MHz clock and they output a single clocked logic level whose duty cycle expresses the analog input. The data bit is "decimated", really averaged, to give an integer analog value. That is usually done in an FPGA, with a sinc3 filter or something. I'm wondering of such an ADC can be used without an FPGA. I guess an ana...

https://spectrum.ieee.org/grid-scale-battery-storage-nickel-hydrogen With gullible lunatics like Flyguy claiming that lithium ion batteries are too dangerous to use. one has to suspect that the guys behind this battery chemistry are spending a bit on propaganda. The interesting bit in the article is the sentence. "Their use of expensive platinum catalysts kept them relegated to spa

Does anyone know anything about the effects of negaive-voltage zenering the gate of a SiC power fet? Specifically, I'm designing a gate driver for the Cree C2M0280120D and I'm wondering about what might happen in the rare case that I zener the gate by a mA or so. The intent is to drive it -5 to +15, but the -5 could be more in some pathological case. I'll get some from stock later and te...

This app came with the yoke-style sound amplifier I bought, but it seems to work with a cell phone and earbuds too, and though it's not what an audiologist would do, IMO it's pretty good, and easy, and includes more than I would have espected** you don't have to buy the sound amplifier if you don't want, though I've included the link **It tests hearing at iirc 4 frequencies and goes up and ...

I often have to measure the difference of two 392V sources. Unfortunately, sometimes it become the sum, using a one-time fused muti-meter. I am thinking about using a rectifier diode (for direction) , 6V zener (for voltage), 6V 5W light bulb (for current) and 10 ohms resistor. Will it work? Perhaps 22 or 33 ohms resistor?

I recently switched phone providers, replacing the SIM chip. Which got me wondering an old wonderment: what's inside? It's remarkable that the industry has standardized on a single form factor and pin out. But I'm curious, what is the separation of functions, between the chip and the surrounding device? How to characterize it as a black box, what exactly are the signals which flow a...
