What does it take to spin up an IDE hard drive?
Here's the scenario...
You're at a swapmeet or garage sale or picking up
a drive you bought on Craigslist.
Me: "Is it free of bearing noise?"
Seller: "Oh yeah, was my brother's primary drive."
Note, the question was completely avoided...

Toying with the idea of replacing an HD with a usb stick, to reduce power
usage, weight, heat, size, etcetera.
There are lost of adaptors that let you plug a drive into a usb port; is
there an adaptor that does the reverse? The board in question (Series 1
Tivo) has no USB port, just an IDE...

I just had another idea:
Rounded serial ata ide cables for any serial ide devices like disk drive or

This will probably help a bit... it might also make it more easy to bind
them to the sides or so... those original bigger/width cables are more
difficult to bend, so these roun...

For about $10 (perhaps less) there seem to be CF ATA (PATA, IDE)
adapters available, which would solve your solid-state desire for less
scratch than an ATA "sold state drive", based on non-extensive search.
