I've had newsproxy in place for a month now and love it. But I would
rather not have to use it, since it (and Google) are limiting me.

Technically, I think we are, pretty much.
I have a great deal of respect for Larkin with respect to his clever

with his company.
Psychologically, IMO, we differ in that John has issues which prevent
him from accepting help which is NIH.

I wish it were so. But I have seen large corporations go down the tubes
in blissful ignorance. For example, right now I am afraid another great
semiconductor manufacturer may also be headed in that direction simply
because they do not listen.

Good grief, reread my posts. I often start a thread by asking for
help, parts, or advice, and I say "thanks" when I get it. I say "oops"
when I'm wrong (which isn't often, because I'm careful about making
declarations that I'm not pretty sure about.)
And I give a lot of help, too.
If you dislike me, fine: that happens. But you're letting dislike
distort your perceptions of reality, which is a dangerous thing for
any engineer to do.

I like Gigablast.com. Not only does it do decent searching, but if you like
it has a link to invoke the same search on Google, ask.com, Yahoo or MSN.

I was recommending Gigablast for the last year or two, but for a while they
got rid of much of their database, but it may be better now.
Some other of my recommended searches....
http://www.mamma.com/
http://www.metacrawler.com/
http://www.searchmash.com/
http://www.dogpile.com/
And yahoo and MSN have pages that Google leave out. Its
hard to keep up knowing who have the databases and who share
them. Google is rediculous finding things with so many stupid
travel and city based sites that offer nothing and get in the way of
finding things. Google has one of the most powerful searches
when you can also click on "Groups" Its like the most inportant search much of the
time. Google Groups.

I like that.
I just figured out that images must contain the search term itself, and not just be from
those web pages. I need to rename some images !

I don't have any, and I sure won't buy any until there is a serious
management change plus some track record of applications engineering
support that actually responds to emails, personal FAE contacts and
telephone.

Do the math...
# sci.electronics.design readers / Total # google users = ???
I don't have any numbers, but I bet that the ratio is nearly zero.
Not much of a boycott.

Why make more messages? It is better if we all complain to Google.
Even better, forward the offending messages to Google so they can ban
the users.

The reason is well known; the Google 'captcha'
is the defense against botnets opening google accounts,
and that has been (imperfectly) cracked. In recent
weeks, the crack has resulted in a flood of bogus accounts,
which (while individually closeable) aren't well controlled by
the techniques that worked fine last month.
Google is undoubtedly detecting and closing the malicious
accounts, and will may have already updated the captcha,
but in the interim, there's a problem. If the captcha problem is
fixed
at Google, there will STILL be bogus accounts from the interregnum,
so the floodgates will only get closed by individual action on the
long tail of the problematic accounts.

That one, either.

I quit Yahoo years ago when stuff in the first ten hits would indicate
that they would match partial without telling you, i.e. if you searched
for "car putz yup" at least one of the first ten hits would contain
car and putz but not yup; and many, many of the first hundred would do
the same.

It doesn't unless you ask it to do so. You have to specifically click on the
link near the bottom of the page to get it to search Google. They do their
own search using their new, improved beta search engine which seems pretty
good so far.

Would you like a bridge with that? Even if Google does close an
account, the offender can sign right back up with the same name.

I got this adware that when you clicked on one item in the Google results
would most often take you to another site. I got that fixed.
I get frustrated using Google because there are so many companies and
unnecessary links getting in the way of results on certain web pages. When
I use other engines I get to the right web page in the first 1 or 2 result pages.
Perhaps these are not really popular but they are still the ones I am looking for.
OK I use some of my web pages as search items. After years of using Google
and being listed in Google, it deleted one of my web pages for abut a year and a half.
They were there in Yahoo and others, It pissed me off.
