Does anyone have any info on whether MPLAB has RS232 compatible programmer
support?

Having downloaded a number of programmer schematics, I've found that a
couple (Serpic & David Tait) that are very similar to the Velleman K8048 and
wondered if this is some sort of industry standard.

If anyone is interested, the examples including Velleman K8048 schematic are
easy to find with google.

The RS232 connector is as follows:

Pin7 (RTS); > CLK/RB6/PGC
Pin4 (DTR); > DATA/RB7/PGD
Pin8 (CTS); < DATA/RB7/PGD
Pin3 (TXD); > Pin3 & Pin9 hardwired together
Pin9 (RI); < VPP/MCLR(NOT)

Each signal has a transistor buffer/level converter between the RS232 +-12V
and PIC logic levels.

TIA.

I don't think MPLAB supports any of these. It doesn't even support
Microchip's own PICkit.

I'm sure I saw that amongst the list of supported devices (V7.61) - but its
on my other PC, I'd have to check.

I know older versions did; I've used serial programmers and
MPLAB before. The version I use now has a bit different
interface, so I know they're not the same...

From the information I've been given here and on abse it seems that most (if
not all) of the serial interface Microchip programmers communicate in true
RS232 whereas the programmer (Velleman K8048) I was hoping to modify has
only level shifters between the RS232 and the PIC 5V signals.

If anyone knows of a MPLAB mode that supports such a "dumb" programmer I'd
be interested to hear.
