I am seeking a telephone answering machine that will only record the call
unless a password is provided, and will then ring the phone.
Is there such a thing?

I remember a design for one - you had to enter a 4 digit code on the phone.

Pretty fuzzy memory but I think either Radio-Electronics or Popular
Electronics magazine. Try a large library?
